Perché dovrebbe far parte del tuo tour?

As you approach Toledo, whether by train or from the highway, two buildings stand out in the distance: the Alcázar and the Cathedral. At the highest point of the hill, you're greeted by the imposing Santa Iglesia Catedral Primada de Toledo, a magnificent example of Gothic architecture and a jewel in Spain's historical heritage. Known simply as the Cathedral of Toledo, this majestic structure is a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of this city, whose entire historic center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Since its construction began in 1226 and extended over several centuries, it combines different styles (including Gothic, Baroque, and Renaissance elements, etc.), resulting in a fascinating blend of shapes and materials. Its main facade, with its tall towers and delicate sculptures, is simply stunning and takes you by surprise as it emerges between the narrow streets as you get closer.

But the best part of this cathedral is its interior. The colorful stained glass windows that adorn its windows filter the sunlight and create a magical atmosphere inside: the Cathedral of Toledo houses the largest collection of original medieval stained glass windows in the world.

Finely carved capitals, vaults, and pillars tell religious and secular stories, while the golden altarpieces and frescoes in its chapels impress with their splendor. The Baroque organ is a luxury, and in its five naves, you have various stops with chapels and ornamental objects to look at closely. One of the greatest wonders of the Cathedral of Toledo is the Main Chapel, a masterpiece of Gothic art. Here, you'll find the main altarpiece, an astonishing structure of carved and gilded wood representing biblical and religious scenes. The double choir, with its richly decorated carved chairs, is also remarkable.

The Treasure of the Cathedral of Toledo is also noteworthy. It houses an impressive collection of sacred art, including jewels, relics, chalices, and precious liturgical objects. Among the standout pieces are the processional crosses of gold and silver, and the custodia containing the first precious metals brought from America (by order of the Catholic Monarchs), a true masterpiece of goldsmithing.

As its foundations date back to Visigothic times and it's built on the site of the city's former main mosque, when the city was the capital of the Roman-Germanic kingdom, the cathedral's walls have witnessed numerous historical events, including coronations, royal weddings, and religious ceremonies.

There's also the possibility of climbing one of its towers to enjoy panoramic views of the city and its surroundings. The view from the top of the tower is simply breathtaking and offers a unique perspective of the valley, the Tajo River, and the new developments around the old city.

Toledo is the city of three cultures (Christian, Jewish, Islamic), and its cathedral contributes to this heritage with its majesty, artistic richness, and historical significance. We recommend visiting it with a few hours to spare to fully appreciate all its elements and make the most of your visit!
