Why visit London
London is the capital of the UK and one of the most iconic cities in the world. As well as leading the way in economics and finance, it is known for its history, influential culture and cosmopolitan lifestyle. And it has its rightful place: if you want to tour a city that tells the story of 19th century Europe, London is the place to be.
The buildings of power are London's most photographed landmarks: Big Ben with Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace. Over the River Thames, the London Eye is another major tourist attraction, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the city that was once the capital of the largest empire in history.
Although London is not lacking in architecture, it is magnetic for its art and culture. Whatever your taste, there's sure to be something for you: it could be the great museums, the theatres of the West End, the markets in Camden Town, the antiques and bookshops of Notting Hill or the magic of King's Cross.
Every time you come back London will welcome you with new things to see, and you'll always want to come back for another visit. "He who tires of London tires of life", said the poet Samuel Johnson.
We share with you 73 places to visit distributed in the following categories:
Mother of British culture. Distinguished, entertaining and attractive. London is a protagonist of globalization and will leave you speechless.
12 Museums, Galleries and Palaces
London's museums all have fascinating and well-curated exhibits. In their halls, you can discover collections from the Stone Age and Ancient Egypt to the Second World War and the present day.
London's palaces are among the most famous in the world. In 2022, some 17 million people flocked to Buckingham Palace between the Platinum Jubilee celebrations and the funeral of Elizabeth II. Kensington Palace has more than four centuries of history, although no monarch has lived there for a long time. How about having your photo taken with a guard in the background - it'll be a memory to last a lifetime!
34 Monuments and Landmarks
To discover most of the sites on our list, you'll have to follow the banks of the Thames. London's cityscape varies from medieval castles to modern glass towers, not forgetting icons such as the Houses of Parliament with its Clock Tower and the 35 bridges, each with a different style.
As you wander around the city, don't be surprised to come across a host of monuments and memorial statues that mark the proud history of the British capital. Marvel at the facades and interiors of the markets, transport stations and theatres dotted around the city.
3 Churches and Temples
While churches are not what London is most renowned for, a few examples are enough to make it unique in this respect too. The history of Anglican Protestantism in the UK is visible in its parishes, although there are also Catholic and other religious centres due to the cosmopolitanism of the metropolis.
Westminster Abbey is over a thousand years old and has been the coronation site of British royalty since 1066. In 2023, King Charles III will be the 40th monarch to be crowned there. More than 3,300 famous people are also buried there, including Isaac Newton and Charles Dickens.
15 Squares and Parks
In terms of green acres, London is the third greenest capital city in the world. Hyde Park is one of the largest and most popular parks in the city, and is home to a number of interesting attractions, such as the Peter Pan statue, the Serpentine Lake and the Lady Diana Memorial. But it's also a perfect place to relax and enjoy a picnic on a summer's afternoon. On the other hand, St. James's Park is the oldest of the Royal Parks and a small oasis of tranquillity in the heart of the city, with beautiful gardens, many species of animals and exceptional views.
London is a city that has always known how to maintain its elegance and history, and this is reflected in its squares. Trafalgar Square is a popular meeting place for Londoners and one of London's most recognisable landmarks.
9 Experiences and Activities
If you have some extra time left over after your tours, or if you prefer to get to know London in a more "hands-on" way, we recommend several activities. Take a ride on the London Eye, go on a Jack the Ripper tour, or excursions to Celtic and Roman sites - the choice is yours!
