Why visit Berlin
Berlin is the capital of Germany and one of the most influential cities in contemporary Europe. Known for its recent history, Berlin is constantly renewing itself and expanding its cultural offerings. If you want to take a tour of 20th century Europe, Berlin is THE best city of all.
A must-see icon is the historic Berlin Wall, which divided the city during much of the Cold War and became its most important symbol for the whole world. Today, you can see remnants of the wall and visit museums that explain its history and significance.
In addition to its history, Berlin is known for its art and science. The Pergamon Museum is one of the most visited museums in the city and houses a wide variety of ancient art and artefacts. The Jewish Museum is another important museum in Berlin and one that we enjoyed very much, offering a wealth of information about Jewish history in Germany.
Berlin is also a city full of entertainment, with a great variety of bars, clubs and cafes. The Kreuzberg neighbourhood is famous for its bohemian atmosphere and its cocktail bars, while the city centre has a large number of bars and nightclubs. You can also stroll around the KuDamm area and go shopping.
We share with you 57 places to visit distributed in the following categories:
From darkness to light, from division to unity. Berlin is an imposing city, full of history and so diverse that each neighborhood has its own personality.
23 Museums, Galleries and Palaces
There are more than 180 museums in Berlin, so even if you were to visit one for every rainy day, you wouldn't have enough time in the year to see them all! The Museumsinsel, or Museum Island, was opened almost 200 years ago and is home to five cultural complexes with internationally renowned collections.
In Berlin, culture is synonymous with memory, as in few other places. That's why there are a number of museums dedicated to the recent history of Germany's imperial, Nazi and communist eras, with immersive exhibitions to raise awareness and educate through art. The gigantic Jewish Museum Berlin is located in the very centre of Berlin.
12 Monuments and Landmarks
Because of its war wounds, it was nicknamed the Grey City decades ago. Today, we bet you can't take a picture of the cityscape without a couple of construction cranes in the sky! Berlin teaches us that beauty can rise from the darkest ashes.
As you walk around, you're sure to notice the contrasts between the western and eastern parts of the city, even 30 years after reunification. Whichever district you walk through, you will see that the Germans do not skimp on the size of their buildings.
7 Churches and Temples
Over 500 years ago, Germany was the epicentre of the Protestant Reformation. The monk Martin Luther hung his famous 95 theses for the renewal of Christianity in Wittenberg, south of Berlin, and since then the history of that faith has never been the same.
Many of Berlin's churches are marked by recent history and the wars that engulfed the capital. For this reason, many of them have reconstructed portions or have memorial spaces attached to them. Thus, Berlin's churches are a further testimony to the effort to begin a new journey.
11 Squares and Parks
With more than 2,500 green spaces, almost half of Berlin is devoted to open spaces full of nature. The Tiergarten is the lungs of the German capital, set aside 500 years ago as a hunting ground for the Prussian nobility.
Berlin's monuments and sights are interspersed with large squares that open up the sky for visitors. Again, the examples on our list are steeped in history: while Alexanderplatz was divided up during the Cold War, centuries-old areas such as the Lustgarten or Leipziger Platz have been with Berliners since before Germany existed.
4 Experiences and Activities
If you have some extra time left over after your sightseeing, or if you prefer to get to know Berlin in a more "hands-on" way, we recommend several activities. For example, in the German capital you'll find the largest shopping area in continental Europe, the KaDeWe. Alternatively, you can go underground to see a hidden bunker or one of the old breweries - there is so much underground space in Berlin that it is equivalent to 40% of its surface area!
